Itinerary
Day 1
Arrival in Yerevan
You’ll land at Zvartnoc International Airport at 11:30 where your guide meets you for the drive into Yerevan. The capital gets called the ‘pink city’ because of its distinctive stone architecture, and you’ll see this firsthand when you walk through Republic Square and along Mashtoc Avenue. The House of Opera and Ballet is worth seeing, and then you can head up to Cascade park to get a sense of the city layout. Before checking into your hotel, you’ll visit Matenadaran, the Manuscript Museum, where they keep ancient Armenian manuscripts. It’s a lot of ground to cover in one afternoon, but your guide will pace things so you’re not rushing.

Sevanavank Monastery sits on the peninsula and has two structures dating back to around the 10th century. From there you head to Dilijan, a town where Sharamberyan Street has museums, shops, and markets to browse through. The site matters historically because Gregory the Illuminator, who converted Armenia to Christianity, was held prisoner here for 13 years. You’ll get views of Mount Ararat from the monastery grounds. Next you’ll drive to Noravank, a 12th-century monastery that sits dramatically within towering rocks in a gorge, making it unlike most other religious structures you might have seen. Then you visit Geghard Monastery, named after the legendary lance mentioned in Christian tradition. The complex you’ll see was constructed in the mid-13th century. Later, you stop at a local house where you can watch and help prepare Armenian lavash, the thin bread cooked in a ground oven called a tonir.
